The National Society of Hypnosis and Psychotherapy: Professional Register and Association

member_logo

The Executive Committee of the National Society of Hypnosis and Psychotherapy is pleased to welcome you to our website. It is hoped that prospective and existing clients will find this site a useful resource in learning more about hypno-psychotherapy and hypnotherapy and finding ethically trained practitioners from our hypnotherapy and psychotherapy register to assist them with a variety of psychological and emotional issues.

This site provides a hypnotherapy and psychotherapy register for the UK. There is a difference between hypnotherapy and hypno-psychotherapy, in that ethical hypnotherapists train for one year and undertake 450 hours of tuition in that time, whilst hypno-psychotheapists train over a minimum of 4 years and undertake 1800 of Masters Degree level tuition. The vast majority of members have been trained by the National College of Hypnosis and Psychotherapy and the National School of Hypnosis and Psychotherapy which have trained hypnotherapists and hypno-psychotherapists since 1977 and 1980 respectively. You can rest assured that those therapists found on our hypnotherapy and psychotherapy register have been trained to the highest standards with many also being accredited by such bodies at the UK Council for Psychotherapy, the European Association for Psychotherapy, and the European Association of Hypno-Psychotherapy. Our members are also eligible for the Complementary and Natural Health Council (CNHC).

The grading of membership is as follows:

Honorary Fellow

This is the highest grade and is awarded to those who have achieved the National College’s Advanced Diploma in Hypno-Psychotherapy and are thus eligible to be registered with the UKCP. This training is at masters degree level and takes a minimum of four years. Fellows are entitled to the post nominal letters FNSHP(Hon) and to designate themselves as a "Registered Hypnotherapist" and a "Registered Hypno-Psychotherapist". Additionally, these practitioners have been recognised for significant contributions to the profession as a whole and/or the National College of Hypnosis and Psychotherapy.

Fellow

Fellows are entitled to the post nominal letters FNSHP and to designate themselves as a "Registered Hypnotherapist" and a "Registered Hypno-Psychotherapist"

Member

This grade is awarded to those who have achieved the National College’s Certificate and/or Diploma in Hypno-Psychotherapy. This training is at masters degree level and takes a minimum of fifteen months. Additionally Membership is open to hypnotherapists who hold a qualification which is based on the National Occupational Standards for Hypnotherapy (equivalent to the Hypnotherapy Practitioner Diploma (HPD) or higher). Members are entitled to the post-nominal letters MNSHP and to designate themselves as a "Registered Hypnotherapist". Holders of the National College's Diploma are also entitled to use the designation "Registered Hypno-Psychotherapist".

Student

Students of the National College are granted student membership and may work with certain issues under the guidance of their tutors. The fact that they are students must be made clear to all potential clients.

Hypnotherapy is the clinical application of hypnosis to assist clients to resolve problems arising from habits, maladaptive behaviours, pain (under medical supervision) and psychosomatic medical conditions. It can also be used to assist clients in maximising potential in settings such as work and sport. Hypnotherapists should be trained to a level 4 NVQ equivalent standard. Hypnotherapists are not trained to deal with deep psychological issues or psychiatric illness.

Psychotherapy is defined by UKCP (2009) as a process “to help clients gain insight into their difficulties or distress, establish a greater understanding of their motivation, and enable them to find more appropriate ways of coping or bring about changes in their thinking and behaviour. Psychotherapy involves exploring feelings, beliefs, thoughts and relevant events, sometimes from childhood and personal history, in a structured way.”

Hypno-psychotherapy is the clinical application of hypnosis to enhance psychotherapeutic interventions. Hypno-psychotherapists should be trained at masters level and are trained to deal with deep psychological issues and psychiatric illness.
